Vogelsong was designated for assignment on Tuesday after making 22 relief appearances for Pittsburgh this season. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 6.39 ERA through 38 innings. "You don't ever want to get released or designated, but maybe this will be the best thing for me," Vogelsong said. "Maybe I was the reason we were losing games, I don't know."

Vogelsong agreed to a $555,000, one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday. The 28-year-old right-hander could earn as much as $125,000 in bonuses next season as a starter and as much as $75,000 as a reliever. In 2005, Vogelsong was 2-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 44 games.
