The Mets have released Redman, the former Pirates outfield prospect who was acquired by New York in a November trade. Redman batted .260 (13-for-50) with four doubles, a triple and nine RBIs in 24 games this spring, but lost out to Endy Chavez for a reserve role with the Mets.

The Mets purchased the contract of Redman from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 28-year-old outfielder hit .251/.292/.332 with two home runs and 26 RBIs in 319 at-bats, plus four stolen bases in five attempts.

The Pirates removed Redman from their 40-man roster on Saturday, meaning the team now has 10 days to release or trade the outfielder. Redman started the season as the starting center fielder, but lost his job after Pittsburgh called up Chris Duffy. Redman ended up hitting .251 with two home runs and 26 RBIs in 135 games.

Redman exercised his $4.95 option to remain a member of the Pirates for 2006 He finished this year at 5-15, 4.90 in 178.1 innings

Redman is upset with his playing time so far this season. He has started in just five of Pittsburgh's first 10 games. Redman is batting just .200 and has already committed two errors in center field.
