Brian Schneider

8/1/2006

Schneider did not start in the Nationals' 10-7 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday, but had to enter the game after backup catcher Robert Fick suffered a left rib cage separation. Schneider went 0-for-1 in the win and is expected to start behind the plate for Washington on Tuesday, despite being bothered by a mild strain in his lower back that caused him to leave Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Washington Nationals placed Schneider on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring before Saturday's loss to the Atlanta Braves. The move was retroactive to Thursday, and the Nationals filled his roster spot by activating Robert Fick from the disabled list. Schneider was hitting .230 with a home run and 14 RBIs.

The Nationals and Schneider agreed to a $16 million, four-year contract on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration. Schneider, regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in baseball, threw out 38 percent of would-be basestealers last season. He has led the majors in that category the last two years.

Barring any setbacks, Schneider plans to return to the Washington Nationals' lineup for Tuesday's meeting with the Houston Astros. The catcher has missed nearly a week with bursitis in his right shoulder. Prior to his time off, Schneider was 6-for-12 (.500) with a home run, two RBI and a pair of walks in his last four games.

Schneider has been battling some bursitis in his right shoulder recently, so the Washington Nationals have decided to give him some time off. The catcher has missed the team's last two games with the injury, but hopes to return to action at some point during a three-game series against the San Diego Padres over the weekend. Officially, he has been listed as day-to-day.

Schneider was forced to leave Monday's game against the Atlanta Braves after getting struck on the left hand by Marcus Giles' backswing. The catcher, who was replaced in the Nationals' lineup by Gary Bennett, will be re-evaluated on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury.
