Rob Bell

7/13/2005

Bell, who was designated for assignment last week by Tampa Bay, was outrighted to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday after he cleared waivers. The 28-year-old righthander was 1-1 with an 8.28 ERA in eight games (three starts) this season for the Rays.

The Devil Rays activated Bell from the 15-day disabled list, then designated him for assignment. They now have 10 days to trade, release or place Bell on waivers.

Bell was placed on the 15-day disabled list for "personal and psychological issues." The Tampa Bay pitcher has not made an appearance in a game since last Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox, when he walked the only batter he faced. On the season, Bell is 1-1 with an 8.28 ERA.

Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella said only that Bell was going home and did not know of a timetable for the pitcher's possible return. The Devil Rays have recalled Seth McClung from Triple-A Durham to fill Bell's roster spot.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have reshuffled their rotation with Mark Hendrickson going on the disabled list. The Rays have added John Webb and Doug Waechter to the starting five, and Bell has been moved to the bullpen. In three starts this season, Bell is 1-1 with a 10.80 ERA and 2.03 WHIP.

With Mark Hendrickson bothered by shoulder stiffness, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have moved up Bell's next start by a day. The 28-year-old righthander will pitch against the Yankees on Monday night on three days' rest. Bell is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in a pair of 2005 starts.

If Hendrickson can't go on Tuesday in Bell's regular spot, the Rays will have to call on Casey Fossum or Doug Waechter for a spot start.
