Romano has become a free agent after refusing an outright assignment to the minor leagues by the Cincinnati Reds. The 26-year-old outfielder was 8-for-30 (.267) with two doubles and a homer in 19 games for the Reds this season. Earlier this year, Romano was batting .309 with 17 doubles, 33 runs scored and 31 RBI in 55 games with Triple-A Louisville.

The Cincinnati Reds outrighted Romano to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday. The 26-year-old utilityman was 8-for-30 (.267) with two doubles and a homer in 19 games for the Reds this season. He returns to Louisville, where he was batting .309 with 17 doubles, 33 runs scored and 31 RBI in 55 games.

On Saturday, the Cincinnati Reds put Ryan Freel on the 15-day disabled list and replaced him with Romano. The promotion from Triple-A Louisville was a birthday present for Romano, who turned 26 on Friday. He was 4-for-13 (.308) with one RBI in an eight-game stint with the Reds earlier this season. With Louisville, Romano was a .309 hitter in 55 games, with 17 doubles, 33 runs scored and 31 RBI.

Designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds last week, Romano cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville. The utility player is a .295 hitter at Louisville, with three homers and 27 RBI in 46 games.

Romano has been designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds, making room on the roster for Wily Mo Pena, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. In eight games with the Reds this season, Romano is 4-for-13 with two doubles and an RBI. The Reds will have 10 days to trade the outfielder, release him or send him outright to the minor leagues.

The Cincinnati Reds have purchased Romano's contract from Triple-A Louisville, filling the roster spot of injured starting pitcher Paul Wilson. The 25-year-old outfielder, who was claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last year, was batting .295 with two home runs, 24 RBI and four stolen bases in 32 games with the minor league club this season.
