Eric Munson

12/22/2005

Munson has signed with the Houston Astros, agreeing to a minor league contract. The infielder spent the majority of the 2005 campaign with Triple-A Durham, batting .285 with 25 home runs and 71 RBIs in 100 contests. He also appeared in 11 games with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, but struggled, hitting just .167 with two RBIs.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have recalled Munson from Triple-A Durham, where he hit .285-25-71 and slugged .539 in 100 games.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays activated Munson from the disabled list on Wednesday and optioned him to Triple-A Durham. Bruised ribs sidelined Munson for a month, a little more than a week after he was recalled from Durham. He was 2-for-7 (.286) with three walks in four games before he was injured. At Durham, he's a .289 hitter with 20 homers and 55 RBI in 75 contests.

Tampa Bay placed Munson on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday with bruised ribs. To take his spot on the roster, the club has purchased Chris Singleton's contract from Triple-A Durham. Munson, who has two hits in seven at bats with the Devil Rays this season, was injured sliding into home plate against Toronto on Tuesday night.

On Thursday, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays recalled Munson from Triple-A Durham. The 27-year-old lefthanded hitter appeared in the Rays' starting lineup Thursday night against the New York Yankees. He is batting sixth and serving as the Rays' designated hitter.

Munson, who was released last week by the Minnesota Twins after batting just .184 with three RBI in 12 exhibition games this spring, has inked a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The infielder likely will be assigned to Triple-A Durham.

In 109 games with the Detroit Tigers in 2004, Munson batted .212 with 19 home runs and 49 RBI.
