Rafael Furcal

3/29/2006

Furcal was forced to leave an exhibition game Tuesday with back spasms. The Dodgers' shortstop first experienced discomfort running from first to third base, reports the Los Angeles Times, and left after sliding head-first into home a short time later.

Furcal enjoyed a successful return to the diamond Wednesday following offseason knee surgery. The Dodgers' shortstop, who was signed away from Atlanta over the winter, walked and stole a base against his former team. Furcal also grounded out before leaving the game in the third inning.

Furcal is expected to make his first appearance in a spring training game Wednesday. The Dodgers' shortstop, who was signed to a $39 million, three-year contract in December, has been rehabbing a surgically repaired right knee this spring. His spring debut will come against his old team, the Atlanta Braves.

Furcal ran the bases on Friday for the first time this spring and reported an improvement in his surgically repaired right knee. The Dodgers shortstop is tentatively scheduled to play in his first game Friday.

Just a month after being the hottest free agent on the market, Furcal announced he will undergo arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on his right knee. The switch-hitting shortstop, who signed a $39 million, three-year contract Dec. 7 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, is expected to recover fully in two to three week and should be available when spring training begins.

Furcal has passed his physical with the Los Angeles Dodgers, making his signing official. After considering offers from the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves, the shortstop decided to head west, inking a three-year contract worth a reported $39 million. In 154 games with the Braves last season, he batted .284 with 12 home runs, 58 RBIs and 46 stolen bases.

12/4/2005

Nothing is official at this point, but reportedly, Furcal has agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, pending a physical. The shortstop, who also was speaking with the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves, is expected to receive a three-year deal worth nearly $40 million. In 154 games last season, he batted .284 with 12 home runs, 58 RBI and 46 stolen bases.

7/11/2005

Furcal recorded a career-high five hits in Sunday's loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, going a perfect 5-for-5 with a double and solo home run. The Braves' shortstop has hit safely in his last five games. Over that span, he is 12-for-23 with a pair of doubles, two homers, five RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base.

6/30/2005

Going 2-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and two runs scored in Wednesday's loss to the Florida Marlins, Furcal notched his fourth consecutive multihit game. Over that span, the Braves' shortstop is 8-for-18 (.444) with two doubles, two triples, two RBI, four steals and seven runs. He's also bumped his on-base percentage up to .291, the highest it has been since mid-May.

6/2/2005

Furcal was a late scratch from the Braves' lineup Wednesday night after reporting discomfort in his right shoulder. The injury is not considered serious, but manager Bobby Cox indicated that the shortstop likely will take Thursday off as well. Wilson Betemit will continue to fill the void in the lineup until Furcal is able to return to regular duty.

5/30/2005

Furcal has been running wild recently, swiping nine stolen bases in his last eight contests. The Braves' shortstop also has put together a seven-game hit streak, improving his batting average to its current .232. Over that span, he is 10-for-28 with one double, two triples and six RBI.

5/19/2005

Despite his continued struggles at the plate, Furcal has remained at the top of the Braves' batting order all season. The shortstop, who has a career .343 on-base percentage, has posted a dismal .267 OBP through 40 games this season. Over the past couple of weeks, he has just six hits in his last 46 at-bats (.130), and has seen his 2005 batting average drop from .256 to .222.

4/26/2005

The Atlanta Braves hope Furcal's performance in Monday's game against the New York Mets is a sign of things to come. The shortstop, who has been mired in a slump to start the season, went 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and three stolen bases, boosting his batting average to .235.

Furcal has been inconsistent over the first few weeks of the 2005 campaign, with his batting average hovering around .200. In 20 games, he has an on-base percentage of just .275 with three homers, seven RBI, seven stolen bases and 10 runs scored.
