Sean Burroughs

6/22/2006

Burroughs was designated for assignment by the Devil Rays on Wednesday, which means the team has 10 days to trade, release or waive him. Burroughs came to Tampa Bay in an offseason deal that sent right-hander Dewon Brazelton to the San Diego Padres. He was expected to be the team's starting third baseman, but injuries and inconsistency limited him to just 21 at-bats this season.

Burroughs was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, retroactive to March 30, with a lower back strain. The Devil Rays' infielder was traded to the team from the Padres in the offseason and signed a $1.5 million, one-year contract that includes a $2.25 million club option for 2007. The 25-year-old, who was the ninth overall pick in the 1998 Draft, struggled in 2005 and actually spent more than a month in the minor leagues working on his swing.

Burroughs and the Devil Rays avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $1.5 million, one-year contract that includes a $2.25 million club option for 2007. Tampa Bay acquired the infielder from the San Diego Padres on Dec. 7 in exchange for right-hander Dewon Brazelton. The 25-year-old, who was the ninth overall pick in the 1998 Draft, struggled in 2005 and actually spent more than a month in the minor leagues working on his swing.

The San Diego Padres have traded Burroughs to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in exchange for right-hander Dewon Brazelton. The 25-year-old infielder, who was the ninth overall pick in the 1998 Draft, struggled in 2005 and actually spent more than a month in the minor leagues working on his swing. In 93 games with the Padres last season, he batted just .250 with one home run, 17 RBI and four stolen bases.

Burroughs won't be playing third base for San Diego in 2006, as the Padres acquired Vinny Castilla Thursday in a deal that shipped right-hander Brian Lawrence and cash to Washington. Burroughs' standing in the Padres' organization took a further hit last season, when he batted .250 with just 10 extra-base hits and 17 RBIs in 93 games. He slugged .299.

After spending nearly six weeks at Triple-A Portland, Burroughs was recalled by the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. The veteran infielder batted .290 with eight doubles, three homers and 14 RBI in 32 games for Portland. He departed San Diego with a .255 average and .302 slugging mark in 78 games.

San Diego optioned Burroughs to Triple-A Portland on Saturday. Burroughs has been struggling this season, hitting .255 with just one home run and 15 RBI.

According to Padres' manager Bruce Bochy, Burrough should return to the lineup during this weekend's series against the Chicago Cubs, perhaps as early as Friday's tussle. The third baseman has been since May 25, due to a strained left quadriceps muscle. For the season, he is batting .266 with one home run, eight RBI and two stolen bases in 41 games.

Burroughs has been absent from the Padres' lineup since May 25, due to a strained left quadriceps muscle. The third baseman continues to improve, and a trip to the 15-day disabled list is not expected at this time. In his absence, Geoff Blum has been handling the hot-corner duties, and Damian Jackson is getting the nod at second base.
