Rod Barajas

1/16/2006

Barajas avoided arbitration with the Rangers on Monday, agreeing to a one-year deal worth $3.2 million. The 30-year-old catcher established career highs in every offensive category last season, hitting .254 with 21 home runs and 60 RBIs.

Barajas, who missed three games last week because of a broken blood vessel that led to swelling in his right index finger, sat again on Monday, when the Texas Rangers returned home to open a three-game series against Baltimore. The catcher's finger injury is lingering and could be a factor over the final weeks of the season.

After straining a muscle in his back on Sunday, Barajas felt markedly better on Monday. He sat out the Texas Rangers' 13-3 loss to the Angels Monday night, though he took batting practice before the game. While he may miss another day or two, it appears Barajas shouldn't miss much time with this minor back ailment.

Barajas left Sunday's game in the sixth inning after straining a muscle in his back at some point during his fourth-inning at-bat. The Texas catcher will be examined Monday by team physician Dr. Keith Meister. Barajas said he occasionally has felt pain in his upper back throughout his career, but never to this extent.
