Shea Hillenbrand

7/20/2006

Hillenbrand was cut by the Blue Jays on Wednesday night after he was chastised during a team meeting and refused to sit in the dugout with his teammates. Hours before, Hillenbrand criticized the organization and said he expected to be traded. The designated hitter and corner infielder was upset because he wasn't in the starting lineup for the second consecutive game and nobody in Toronto's front office congratulated him on adopting a baby girl last weekend.

Hillenbrand left Saturday's 17-6 loss to the Yankees after colliding with Gary Sheffield at first base. Sheffield ran into the back of the head of the Toronto first baseman and they both fell to the ground. The Blue Jays said he will undergo a CT scan. Lyle Overbay took Hillenbrand's place at first.

Hillenbrand reached a one-year, $5.8 million contract agreement with the Blue Jays on Thursday, avoiding arbitration.

Hillenbrand suffered ligament damage to a knuckle on his left hand Tuesday night, and Toronto's designated hitter has been shut down for the remainder of the season. It's possible the injury will require offseason surgery. Hillenbrand, who batted .291 with 18 home runs and 82 RBI on the season, is leading the Jays in runs (91), doubles (36) and hits (173).

Hillenbrand and the other Toronto corner infielders who share DH duties will be squeezed for playing time this week. The Blue Jays play interleague series in Chicago and Houston, and the odd man out between Hill, Hillenbrand and Hinske at the infield corners will be available only to pinch-hit.

Hillenbrand has been on a tear for the Toronto Blue Jays. After going 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Yankees, the Jays' designated hitter is 13-for-24 (.542) with three doubles and five runs scored in his last six games. That .542 clip has vaulted him into the American League lead in the batting race. He's hitting .410 in 26 games for the season.
