Geoff Blum

11/17/2005

After leaving San Diego via a July trade to win a World Series ring with Chicago, Blum has agreed to return to the Padres for 2006. The utility player has signed a one-year, $650,000 deal. Blum batted .229 with a .296 on-base percentage in 109 games for the Padres and White Sox. He capped his season with a 14th-inning home run in Game 3 of the World Series, putting the Sox one game away from the title.

10/26/2005

Blum homered in his first career World Series at-bat in the 14th inning on Tuesday night to lead the White Sox to a 7-5 victory and a 3-0 series lead over the Astros. It was only the second at-bat this postseason for the former Astro, and his first since Game 1 against the Red Sox in the ALDS three weeks ago.

Blum looks like the favorite to get most of the starts at third base after the White Sox placed the starter, Joe Crede, on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a fractured finger. Acquired from San Diego on July 31, Blum is batting .214 with a .254 on-base percentage in 19 games since joining the White Sox.

7/31/2005

Blum was traded to the Chicago White Sox in return for minor league pitcher Ryan Meaux. In 78 games with the Padres, Blum hit .242 with five home runs and 22 RBI.

6/3/2005

Blum has been on a tear of late, notching two or more hits in each of his last seven games. Over that span, the Padres' infielder is 15-for-32 (.469) with four doubles, one home run, five RBI, nine runs scored and a stolen base.

5/24/2005

With Mark Loretta sidelined for at least two months with a torn ligament in his thumb, Blum is expected to step into the Padres' lineup and see the majority of the starts at second base. Veteran infielder Damian Jackson also will figure into the mix during Loretta's absence.

5/18/2005

Blum has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the San Diego Padres. The infielder, who has been sidelined with a chest contusion since colliding with teammate Ryan Klesko on April 29, is expected to fill in at second base for the ailing Mark Loretta for the time being. In 21 games this season, Blum is batting .271 with three home runs and seven RBI.

5/17/2005

Blum, who has been sidelined with a chest contusion since colliding with teammate Ryan Klesko on April 29, has begun a rehab assignment with Class-A Lake Elsinore. The veteran infielder likely will spend the majority of this week with the minor league club, but could rejoin the Padres in time for their weekend series with the Seattle Mariners. He will be evaluated on a daily basis.

Blum will claim a reserve role with the Padres upon his return. In 21 games this season, he is batting .271 with three home runs and seven RBI.

5/14/2005

Blum will take batting practice on Saturday and could start a rehabilitation assignment at Class-A Lake Elsimore over the weekend. Blum, who is probably still a week away from coming off the disabled list, has been sidelined with a chest contusion since colliding with Ryan Klesko on April 29.

5/3/2005

Blum's bruised chest continues to be too sore for him to play, so the Padres have decided to place him on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 30. The infielder, who suffered the injury when he collided with teammate Ryan Klesko during Friday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, will be replaced on the roster by veteran utilityman Robert Fick.

With Khalil Greene still about a week away from returning to the lineup, the Padres will look to Jesse Garcia to fill in at shortstop for the time being. In 21 games this season, Blum is batting .271 with three home runs and seven RBI. He should be ready for activation when eligible in a couple of weeks.

4/30/2005

Blum is expected to be sidelined for a couple of games with a chest bruise after colliding with teammate Ryan Klesko on Friday. The infielder has been playing shortstop in place of the injured Khalil Greene, but the Padres will use Jesse Garcia at the position for now. Blum is listed as day-to-day.

Blum hopes to return as early as Sunday. In 21 games this season, he is batting .271 with three home runs and seven RBI.

4/18/2005

With Khalil Greene expected to miss a month with a broken right ring finger, Blum is expected to see the majority of the starts at shortstop for the San Diego Padres. The veteran infielder, who is batting .286 with two home runs in 10 games this season, will split time with Jesse Garcia.

Blum can bat anywhere in the lineup, and since he is a switch-hitter, he supplies the Padres with some versatility. He's the better offensive option between the two potential subs.

4/13/2005

Blum lead off the first game of Wednesday's double header against the Chicago Cubs with a home run batting lefthanded against Kerry Wood. The Padres' infielder went deep again in the top of the ninth, this time from the right side facing reliever Cliff Bartosh. He now has homered from both sides of the plate in the same game three different times in his major league career.

Blum got the starting nod in place of Sean Burroughs, who handled the hot-corner duties in the second game of the day. In seven games this season, Blum is 4-for-12 with two homers and two RBI.
