Francisco Cordero

4/27/2006

Cordero blew his third straight save opportunity Wednesday, allowing a leadoff home run in the ninth inning to Oakland's Dan Johnson while protecting a one-run lead. The Texas closer couldn't nail down a save for a second straight night against Oakland and also blew a save opportunity against Tampa Bay on Saturday.

A day after Cordero agreed to join the Dominican Republic team for the final two games of the World Baseball Classic, it has been decided that the Rangers' closer will not play in the WBC. Cordero has been nursing a sore right shoulder, and the insurance company covering injuries decided against allowing him to play in light of his shoulder woes.

Doug Brocail picked up the save for Texas in the Rangers' 7-5 win over the New York Yankees Monday night, as Cordero was unavailable because of a mild biceps strain. The 30-year-old righthander is 2-1 with a 3.54 ERA and 28 saves this season.

After blowing two of his first four save chances this season, Cordero has converted five straight opportunties for the Texas Rangers. He worked a quiet ninth inning against Tampa Bay on Wednesday to post his major league-leading seventh save of 2005.

Cordero has posted a miniscule .188 opponent batting average and 2.08 ERA while fanning 11 batters in 8.2 innings this season. He's been even tougher of late. In converting his last five save chances, the 29-year-old righthander has allowed just one hit and a pair of walks in 4.1 frames. Hitters have gone 1-for-14 (.071) against him.
