Tomo Ohka

5/4/2006

The Milwaukee Brewers placed Ohka on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a partial tear in his right rotator cuff. After feeling tightness in his throwing shoulder, Ohka left his Monday night start against Houston after five innings.

Avoiding arbitration, Ohka agreed to a one-year, $4.54 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday. The right-hander was 11-9 with a 4.04 ERA last season. He has the opportunity to earn an additional $100,000 in performance bonuses: $25,000 each for 185 and 195 innings and $50,000 for 200 innings.

After lasting just 3.2 innings in his previous start, Ohka was on top of his game in Sunday's 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Brewers' righthander scattered four hits over eight shutout innings, striking out season-high nine batters and walking none.

With Washington leading the National League East and second baseman Jose Vidro on the shelf until after the All-Star break, the Nationals traded Ohka to the Milwaukee Brewers for second baseman Junior Spivey on Friday. Ohka is moved soon after turning his back on manager Frank Robinson, when the skipper came out to pull the righthander in the fourth inning of his last start. Ohka departs with a 4-3 record and 3.33 ERA in nine starts and a relief appearance.

After a brief stint in the bullpen, Ohka is back in the Washington Nationals' starting rotation. The righthander got off to an inconsistent beginning to the 2005 campaign, prompting the club to demote him to a relief role. However, he has looked better of late, winning his last two decisions.

Ohka was scheduled to take the mound against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, but instead, he has been moved to the bullpen, opening a spot in the Nationals' starting rotation for Claudio Vargas, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list. Ohka has been inconsistent in six starts this season, going 2-3 with a 4.80 ERA. He has walked 19 batters in 30 innings of work.

Ohka will be used in long relief for the time being. He will be the first option if any of the Nationals' current starters go down with injury or struggle.

Ohka has been struggling recently, and the Nationals are concerned that it might be due to something physical. The righthander, who failed to get out of the fourth inning in Saturday's loss to the New York Mets, is 1-3 with a 5.85 ERA in four starts this season and has walked 15 batters in 20 frames. The Nationals are off on Thursday -- Ohka's normal day to pitch -- so they expect to skip him in the rotation this time around, according to manager Frank Robinson.

Ohka was evaluated by the team's medical staff over the weekend, and no problems were found. Jon Rauch was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Sunday, and he could claim a spot in the rotation if Ohka cannot turn things around.
