Gil Meche

3/6/2006

Meche will miss a scheduled turn on the mound Monday because of a strained oblique muscle in his left side. The Seattle right-hander will be re-evaluated in three days, but the injury is not believed to be serious.

1/26/2006

Meche agreed Thursday to a $3.7 million, one-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, avoiding salary arbitration. The 27-year-old right-hander went 10-8 with a 5.09 ERA in 26 starts and three relief appearances last season. Although his contract is not guaranteed, Meche can make an additional $225,000 in performance bonuses.

After nearly a month on the disabled list for tendinitis in his right knee, Meche returns to the Seattle rotation and replaces Jeff Harris. Meche probably starts Sunday in Detroit. In his first game action since coming off the DL on Friday, the 27-year-old righthander worked two perfect innings of relief in Toronto on Tuesday night. He showed mid-90s heat and a solid curveball.

The Mariners have activated righthanded pitcher Gil Meche from the 15-day disabled list. Meche has been on the DL since August 20 with tendinitis in his right knee. In 25 starts this season, Meche is 10-8 with a 5.23 ERA.

Meche now is experiencing discomfort in his throwing shoulder. The Seattle righthander, who went on the disabled list in mid-August for knee tendinitis, won't be returning to the Mariners anytime soon. In 25 starts this season, he is 10-8 with a 5.23 ERA.

Battling tendinitis in his right knee, Meche has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Seattle Mariners. The righthander, who has not posted a win since July 17, hopes to return within a couple of weeks. In 25 starts this season, he is 10-8 with a 5.23 ERA.

Following a three-run homer he allowed to Cleveland's Victor Martinez, Meche left his Thursday start with a stiff right shoulder after three innings, matching his shortest outing of the 2005 campaign. The Seattle righthander said he began experiencing the discomfort during his pregame warmup. He described it as feeling pressure in the shoulder, rather than pain.

There was more good news on Monday, as Meche not only threw 99 pain-free pitches in a solid outing against the White Sox Sunday. The 26-year-old righthander, bothered by pain and stiffness near his throwing elbow, also experienced no pain the day after his successful outing. The Seattle pitcher worked a quality start and earned the win in a 5-4 decision over Chicago.

Six days of rest seemed to work wonders for Meche, who got some extra down time because of inflammation near his throwing elbow. On Sunday, Meche kept the Mariners from being swept by the White Sox, working 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and a pair of walks while fanning four. He earned the "W" in a 5-4 victory, giving Meche his first decision of 2005. After three starts, the righthander is 1-0 with a 6.14 ERA.

The Seattle Mariners believe Meche is battling some muscular inflammation near his elbow, and nothing more. The 26-year-old righthander experienced discomfort and stiffness near the elbow during his outing against Texas Saturday, and after the game he said it was an issue during spring training and last season, as well. X-rays found no bone spurs or chips. The Mariners believe the ailment is minor.

The current plan is to give Meche an extra day or rest between starts in the early going of the new season. It will be interesting to see if that's a valid solution. Meche says that the stiffness builds as his pitch count rises. Then his velocity drops off several MPH from its normal mid-90s range. Keep an eye on this one.

During his Saturday start and after his fifth-inning departure, Meche said he had been bothered by elbow tendinitis in Arizona last month as well as during his outing against the Texas Rangers. Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said his 26-year-old righthander was bothered by stiffness during the contest and that his velocity was down. Pitching coach Bryan Price believes Meche might be letting the inflammation affect him mentally as well as physically, influencing his velocity.

This is discouraging news about Meche, who has terrific stuff and seemed poised for a possible 2005 breakout after a solid finish to the 2004 campaign. From August 1 on last summer, Meche was 6-2 with a 3.79 in 12 starts after a rough first half.
