Texas' Matthews Jr. was selected to his first All-Star team on Sunday, as a reserve outfielder for the American League. Matthews is batting .334 with eight homers and 43 RBIs this season. Matthews was selected as an injury replacement for Toronto?s Alex Rios, who won?t be able to play.

The Texas Rangers and Matthews agreed Friday to a one-year, $2,387,500 contract. The switch-hitter batted .255 last season with career highs in home runs (17) and RBIs (55) in 475 at-bats.

After missing more than three weeks with a strained left hamstring, Matthews has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Texas Rangers. Prior to the injury, the outfielder was batting .250 with one home run, eight RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 32 games. He takes the roster spot of injured reliever Ron Mahay.

In a few days, Matthews will head to the Rangers' complex in Surprise, Arizona, in order to begin rehab for his strained left hamstring. The center fielder went on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday. He was hitting .250 with one home run and eight RBI in 112 at-bats for Texas.

Injured running out a grounder on Saturday, Matthews was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Texas Rangers on Sunday. The center fielder has a strained left hamstring. The switch-hitting Matthews was batting .250 with one home run and eight RBI in 112 at-bats for Texas.

Matthews recently lost the starting center-field job to Laynce Nix. Andres Torres, recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma to take Matthews' roster spot, will serve as a backup outfielder.

Matthews left Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins in the seventh inning, when he injured his left hamstring while attempting to beat out a grounder to first.

Matthews Jr. has lost his starting job in center field for the Rangers. After having a great spring and earning the number one spot, Matthews Jr. has hit just .216 with two RBI in 14 games this season. Last year's starter, Laynce Nix will become the new everyday center fielder for Texas.

Matthews' solid spring has landed him the Rangers' starting center-field job, at least to begin the season. In 21 exhibition games, the outfielder batted .381 with four doubles, four triples, two home runs, 13 RBI and three stolen bases. Laynce Nix was expected to get the nod, but instead, he was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma.

In 87 games with Texas last season, Matthews batted .275 with 11 home runs, 36 RBI and five stolen bases. He'll likely hit in the bottom part of the Rangers' order this year.
