Chris Singleton

7/4/2005

Singleton was given his release by Tampa Bay on Sunday, a day after the Rays purchased his contract from Triple-A Durham. The veteran outfielder, who had signed a minor league deal with the team last week after being released by the major league club in late May, left the Devil Rays because he misunderstood the team's offer to return to the majors.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have purchased the contract of Chris Singleton from Triple-A Durham. He takes the roster spot of Eric Munson, who is sidelined with bruised ribs. Singleton began the season with Tampa Bay,batting .271 in 28 games, but was designated for assignment on May 20 and released a week later. He signed a minor league contract with the Devil Rays earlier this week.

To make room for Travis Lee's return from the disabled list, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays designated Singleton for assignment. The vetern outfielder batted .271 with a .348 on-base percentage in 59 at-bats for the Rays.

Singleton was fined an undisclosed amount of money for his role in the bench-clearing melee between Tampa Bay and Boston last Sunday. The Rays' outfielder avoided a suspension, however, and he will be available when his team takes on Baltimore this weekend.

If the Devil Rays decide to stick with Joey Gathright as a starter and keep Alex Sanchez as fourth outfielder when he returns from his drug suspension, Singleton probably would be the odd man out in terms of who is cut from the 25-man roster to make room for Sanchez' return.

Singleton is 3-for-13 (.231) with two runs scored and no extra-base hits in six games with Tampa Bay.

Singleton will handle the center-field duties for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Opening Day, replacing Alex Sanchez, who was suspended for 10 days for violating the league's new drug policy. Singleton appeared in 18 exhibition games this spring, batting .267 with two doubles, one triple, seven RBI and a stolen base.

Singleton should get the majority of the starts in Sanchez' absence, but Joey Gathright could get the call as well. Singleton did not play organized baseball last season.
