Scott Williamson

6/28/2006

Williamson was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday after being sidelined since June 4. The Cubs' right-handed reliever made five minor league rehab appearances.

Williamson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with tendonitis in his right elbow. The Chicago Cubs recalled right-hander Carlos Marmol from Double-A West Tennessee in the reliever's place. Marmol is 3-2 with a 2.33 ERA in 11 starts in the minors with 67 strikeouts in 58 innings.

The Chicago Cubs have exercised their 2006 option on Williamson. The veteran reliever, who returned from offseason Tommy John surgery in August, had a 5.65 ERA in 17 games. He worked seven scoreless appearances in September, with nine strikeouts in five innings. He will make $2 million in 2006.

Before the Chicago Cubs took on the New York Mets Friday night, they activated Williamson from the 60-day disabled list. The veteran reliever has been out since Tommy John surgery last October. He enjoyed a successful return, as the 29-year-old righthander worked a scoreless inning and fanned two in the Cubs' 9-5 loss to the Mets.

Williamson may be activated from the disabled list on Friday. The reliever signed a minor-league deal with the Chicago Cubs in January after undergoing elbow replacement surgery last October. He threw two innings of relief for Triple-A Iowa on Friday, allowing two runs on three hits, and is expected to pitch again on Monday and Tuesday.

Williamson recently has been pitching in rookie league games in Arizona, but he is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa as early as this week. The righthander, who underwent reconstructive surgery on his pitching elbow last October, could return to the Cubs' bullpen within the next couple of weeks.
