Status: Fick left the Nationals' 10-7 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday with a left rib cartilage separation and is listed as day-to-day. The catcher is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday after going 1-for-1 in the win and being replaced by Brian Schneider.

As anticipated, Fick underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow Monday. The Washington Nationals' catcher-first baseman, who is expected to come off the bench, had three large, loose bodies removed. He is scheduled to return to spring training Tuesday and begin hitting and throwing within a week. The Nationals expect him to be ready to play by opening day on April 3.

Fick will undergo arthroscopic surgery Monday to remove loose bodies in his right elbow. Fick, who signed with the Washington Nationals in January, will be out 2-4 weeks and still could be ready for Opening Day.

12/13/2005

Fick signed a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals. In 230 at-bats as a utilityman for the San Diego Padres last year, Fick hit .365 with three home runs and 30 RBIs.

The San Diego Padres have purchased Fick's contract from Triple-A Portland, filling the roster spot of infielder Geoff Blum, who will miss the next couple of weeks with a bruised chest. Fick, a utilityman, split the 2004 campaign between the Padres and Devil Rays, batting a combined .199 with six home runs and 26 RBI in 89 games.

Fick will serve as a bench player with the Padres, seeing time as a backup at both corner-outfield positions, first base and catcher.
