A.J. Pierzynski

7/7/2006

Pierzynski won the final spot on the AL All-Star team on Thursday by winning the fan vote. The White Sox catcher is hitting .325 with six home runs and 29 RBIs this season. He was also an All-Star in 2002, while with the Minnesota Twins. Pierzynski is one of seven White Sox players on the AL team, which will be coached by Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen.

Pierzynski was 2-for-3 on Sunday after being ejected from Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs. The White Sox catcher crashed into Michael Barrett trying to score on a sacrifice fly. As he stood up and tried to walk around Barett, Pierzynski was punched in the jaw."I'm sorry it happened, but at the same time, it was kind of a cheap shot," Pierzynski said.

Pierzynski and the White Sox agreed to a three-year, $15 million contract Monday and avoided arbitration. The White Sox catcher will earn $4 million next season and $5.5 million in both 2007 and 2008. Pierzynski was eligible for free agency in 2006.

Pierzynski hit a walk-off two-run home run in Saturday night's White Sox win over the Dodgers. The game-winner gave him 10 home runs on the season, one shy of his career high of 11 in 2003 and 2004.

In the White Sox' 7-0 win over Texas Wednesday, Pierzynski homered for the fourth straight game -- and for the fifth time in six contests. The Sox' catcher has a six-game hitting streak during his home-run stretch, going 7-for-20 (.350) with five bombs and 10 RBI.

In Chicago's 5-2 win over Texas on Tuesday, Pierzynski homered in his third straight game. It was the fourth homer in five games for the White Sox' catcher, who has hit safely in all five of those contests. During his five-game run, he is 6-for-18 (.333) with four homers and eight RBI.

Pierzynski has missed two games after being hit in the right foot by a pitch on Saturday. The White Sox' catcher should be back in the lineup Tuesday, after trainer Herm Schneider drilled three holes into the nail of his big toe to relieve a buildup of pressure.

The White Sox once again square off in a road contest against Oakland on Tuesday.
