Chad Bradford

7/13/2005

Completing a trade that has been rumored for nearly a week, the Oakland Athletics dealt Bradford to the Boston Red Sox for Jay Payton and cash on Wednesday. The sidearming reliever has been on the disabled list all season following surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back on March 7. The 30-year-old righthander is expected to be activated from the disabled list Thursday after making nine rehab appearances with three minor league teams.

Oakland officials declined comment Friday on a report in the Boston Globe that stated the A's will trade the reliever to the Red Sox in exchange for outfielder Jay Payton once Bradford comes off the disabled list.

Bradford inches closer to a return following March surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back. The Oakland reliever is throwing to hitters in Phoenix and could begin a minor league rehab assignment soon. The A's are looking for Bradford to return sometime soon after the All-Star break.

Bradford, who is expected to be sidelined until at least June with a herniated disc in his back, has been moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Jermaine Clark on Oakland's 40-man roster.

Bradford underwent back surgery in early March, and he's still expected to miss close to half of the 2005 season. The procedural move has nothing to do with the success or failure of his rehab work.
