Daryle Ward

7/19/2005

After batting .292 in June, Ward has had a difficult time finding his groove this month. In 14 games in July, the Pirates' first baseman has posted a .170 average with no home runs and just four RBI. He is hitless in his last 22 at-bats, dropping his overall season batting average to .258 -- the lowest it has been since May 11.

Ward went 2-for-4 in Sunday's loss to the San Francisco Giants, with both of his hits reaching the seats. The Pirates' first baseman belted a two-run homer to right-center field in the first inning before adding a solo shot in sixth. He now has five multihomer games in his major league career. Over his last four games, Ward is 5-for-14 with two doubles, two home runs, three walks and five RBI.

Ward should see more regular playing time if he can continue his hot hitting. In 18 games this season, he is batting .264 with four home runs and 10 RBI.
