Lou Merloni

5/12/2005

Merloni underwent surgery Wednesday to repair torn ligaments in his right ankle, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced on Thursday. The utilityman is expected to remain in a cast for four weeks before being fitted for a boot and beginning range of motion exercises.

Merloni, who was 0-for-5 with a walk and a run scored before he was injured, will rehab in preparation for the 2006 season.

A medical exam has revealed that Merloni tore ligaments in his right ankle when he was injured last Sunday in the Angels' win over the Twins. The utility infielder now faces surgery or a long rehabilitation, depending on how he decides to treat his injury. Either way, it appears Merloni is lost for the year.

Merloni sprained his right ankle in the Angels' win over the Twins on Sunday, and the utility infielder left the game. Reportedly Merloni will go on the 15-day disabled list on Monday, which would make room on the Angels' roster for the return of starting second baseman Adam Kennedy.

Merloni had to depart a rare start. For the season, he is 0-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
