Damon Hollins

6/17/2005

The Tommy John surgery that ended Rocco Baldelli's season before it even started means an outfield spot will be open in Tampa Bay all summer. That's good news for Hollins and fellow rookie Jonny Gomes, who can expect to get their share of at-bats with the Rays.

Hollins may be a 30-year-old rookie who turns 31 on June 12, and he doesn't qualify for the batting title because he just arrived from the minors on May 2. But the Tampa Bay outfielder is hitting .325 in 87 plate appearances. That happens to be better than the best of the four rookies who qualify for batting titles in either league -- Colorado's Clint Barmes, who leads with a .323 mark in 214 plate appearances.

Hollins stole three bases in Tampa Bay's loss to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. The recently promoted outfielder hit safely in all three games of the series against the White Sox, but the three steals weren't enough to secure a three-game sweep against the American League Central leaders.

Hollins, who has hit safely in nine of 10 games since his recall, has a six-game hitting streak and a .361 average since arriving from Triple-A Durham. He has scored eight runs in his 10 games.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays recalled Hollins from Triple-A Durham on Monday. The outfielder was hitting .296 with two homers and 17 RBI with Durham.

Hollins, who batted .364 (8-for-22) during a brief stint with Atlanta last season, enters a crowded outfield scenario with the Rays. Carl Crawford, Alex Sanchez and Aubrey Huff have been getting most of the starts, plus Chris Singleton is on the roster and rookie Jonny Gomes has been auditioning for playing time. Huff may get some time at first base with Travis Lee on the disabled list, so there may be some extra time to divide up at one of the corners.
