Eric Milton

5/17/2006

Milton, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on April 24, is expected to return to the Cincinnati rotation Saturday to face the Detroit Tigers in the first round of interleague play. The Reds' left-hander is 2-1 with a 6.50 ERA in three starts this season.

Milton faced hitters Wedesday for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on April 24. The Cincinnati left-hander threw 85 pitches facing teammates Chris Denorfia, Quinton McCracken and Ray Olmedo. He threw 80 pitches in an earlier bullpen session and handled fielding drills successfully on Tuesday, so Milton isn't far off from returning.

Cincinnati's Web site is reporting that Milton will undergo arthroscopic surgery, perhaps as soon as Monday, to clean out damaged cartilage in his sore left knee. The Reds' left-hander is expected to go on the 15-day disabled list soon, retroactive to April 19. Milton reported discomfort after he was roughed up by Florida last Tuesday, and an MRI exam was performed over the weekend.

Milton, who strained a calf muscle during his Tuesday start, will not make his second appearance of the spring Sunday. The Reds' lefty has been scratched from the start and will work a simulated game on the side instead.

Milton's first spring start was delayed until Tuesday by a strained right calf. The Cincinnati left-hander endured a dismal debut, throwing 33 pitches and failing to get out of the first inning following a three-run homer to Toronto's Shea Hillenbrand and an RBI double to John-Ford Griffin. On top of that, he re-aggravated the injury during his brief appearance. He felt the calf grab while backing up home plate on Griffin's double.

Milton's struggles with the longball continued in Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs, as he surrendered four more home runs, increasing his season total to a league-leading 10. The Reds' lefthander was pulled from Tuesday's contest after allowing eight runs on 11 hits in just five innings of work, but did not figure into the decision.

In five starts this season, Milton is 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA. He gave up 43 homers in 34 outings in 2004, so his problems to start this season aren't a huge surprise.
