Jason Varitek

8/3/2006

Varitek had arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday and was expected to begin rehabilitation immediately, though there was no timetable given for his return. The Boston Red Sox catcher left Monday's game after the third inning with a twisted left knee. He'd been hit on the knee Saturday when he blocked home plate and appeared to be favoring it while rounding second base Monday.

Varitek left Boston's game on Monday in the third inning with a twisted left knee. The Red Sox catcher had been hit on the knee on Saturday when he blocked home plate and seemed to be favoring it when he was rounding second base on Monday. He will have surgery on Thursday to repair a partial tear of the meniscus in his left knee and could miss as much as four to six weeks.
