Magglio Ordonez

7/7/2006

Ordonez was added to the AL All-Star team on Friday in place of Manny Ramirez, who has a sore right knee. Ordonez is batting .307 with 15 home runs and 59 RBIs this season. The 32-year-old Tigers' outfielder will play in his fifth All-Star game.

6/28/2006

Ordonez left Detroit's 5-0 victory over Houston in the fourth inning on Wednesday after fouling a pitch off his left shin. He singled the next pitch to center field, then signaled for the training staff and was replaced by pinch-runner Alex Gonzalez.

7/28/2005

Ordonez' hitting streak now has reached 20 games. He's a .410 hitter during the streak (32-for-78), with nine doubles, two dingers and 16 RBI. For the season, the batting average of the Tigers' right fielder has climbed to .333 (34-for-102), with 16 runs scored and 19 RBI in just 27 games. He's been out most of the year because of hernia surgery.

7/27/2005

In Detroit's 8-5 win over Seattle Tuesday, Ordonez singled to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. In his 19-game run, the Tigers' right fielder is batting .413 (31-for-75) with nine doubles, two dingers, 13 runs scored and 16 RBI.

7/25/2005

With two doubles and a single in Detroit's win over Minnesota Sunday, Ordonez has a 17-game hitting streak that began on July 5. The Tigers' right fielder is 29-for-69 (.420) during his streak, with eight doubles, two homers and 14 RBI.

7/8/2005

Ordonez homered for the third time since his return from the disabled list on July 1, boosting the Tigers to a 6-4 win over the Devil Rays Thursday night. In the seven games since rejoining the Detroit lineup, Ordonez is hitting .259 with eight RBI, but with three doubles and three homers among his seven hits, he is slugging .704 over that stretch.

7/1/2005

On Friday, the Detroit Tigers activated Ordonez from the disabled list in time to start in right field against the New York Yankees. The veteran outfielder, who has been out since mid-April following hernia surgery, will bat cleanup for the Tigers.

6/26/2005

On Monday, Ordonez will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Detroit's Triple-A affiliate in Toledo. The 31-year-old right fielder will play five innings in the field for Toledo Monday. The Tigers won't activate Ordonez until he plays nine innings in the outfield on back-to-back days. Manager Alan Trammell expects his right fielder will return to the Tigers in about a week.

6/24/2005

Ordonez has been traveling and working out with the Detroit Tigers in recent days, with next week tentatively targeted for the start of a minor league rehab assignment. The Tigers' outfielder is coming back from hernia surgery in late April.

6/9/2005

Ordonez is now hacking away in batting practice. He took part in an early batting-practice group that lasted 45 minutes on Wednesday. The Tigers' outfielder clearly is showing signs of being healthy again after hernia surgery. While Ordonez isn't expected back before the All-Star break, he isn't too far off from returning.

6/2/2005

Ordonez hit off a tee and played catch Wednesday, marking the start of baseball activity after having hernia surgery in April. The Tigers' right fielder still is a number of weeks from returning, but he's making progress.

4/26/2005

Ordonez is scheduled for hernia surgery in Philadelphia on Wednesday. The Tigers' outfielder is expected to miss 8-12 weeks following the procedure. The estimated time that will be needed to rehab from surgery has been increased from original projections of 4-6 weeks.

4/25/2005

Last week's bone scan didn't locate a fracture of any kind, and the final word seems to be that Ordonez has a hernia. The Tigers' outfielder has an appointment with a Philadelphia-based hernia specialist on Monday, and it's likely that surgery on the ailment will take place soon. Ordonez is expected to miss 4-6 weeks following surgery.

4/21/2005

Somehow ailments suffered by Ordonez are never simple matters. After it was decided that the Tigers' outfielder needed hernia surgery, a Montreal-based hernia specialist has told the patient that he's not certain his injury is a hernia. A bone scan will be taken on Thursday, and that may make the final determination as to what ails Ordonez.

Viral infections can create pains in the same areas as a hernia can, and they can complicate getting an accurate diagnosis of a hernia. There also are many types of hernias, and some are very difficult to detect. If the final word is hernia, Ordonez will miss at least 4-6 weeks, as originally reported. If the pain is from another source, the length of time missed could change.

4/15/2005

Due to continued abdominal problems, Ordonez was sent back to Detroit on Thursday to undergo more tests. The Tigers' outfielder, who has been limited to just three games this season, is not expected to be available for Friday's meeting with the Kansas City Royals, and a timetable for his return has not been set. More should be known about his status once the test results are in.

Bobby Higginson and Marcus Thames will continue to fill the hole in right field until Ordonez is able to get back on the field. Through three games this season, Ordonez is 0-for-10 with three strikeouts, a walk and a run scored. Consider him as day-to-day.

After Ordonez returned to Detroit to undergo tests for continued abdominal problems, doctors concluded that he needs hernia surgery and will miss at least 4-6 weeks. Ordonez missed 110 games last season while with the White Sox due to knee problems, and has played only three games this season for the Tigers because of various ailments.

Although the franchise is relieved to finally know what is wrong, the lineup will miss the power he brings to the table. It is likely that Ordonez will be put on the disabled list. Marcus Thames probably takes Ordonez' place in right field.

4/12/2005

Ordonez has missed four straight games with a viral infection, but Detroit manager Alan Trammell hopes his starting right fielder will be back in the lineup on Tuesday night. The Tigers open a three-game series against division rival Minnesota on Tuesday.

Ordonez is off to an 0-for-6 start with a walk and a run scored in two games.

4/8/2005

Ordonez remained in the dugout for Detroit's game on Friday against Cleveland. After overcoming knee problems and an inflamed colon, Ordonez sat out his second straight start with a viral infection. Manager Alan Trammell said that he'll be absent from the starting lineup for a couple of days, but will be available as an emergency pinch hitter.

Magglio is itching to get back to 100% as his season has not started out the way he'd like. Through two games this season, he's 0-for-7 with a walk and a run scored.

4/7/2005

Ordonez has overcome his knee troubles and inflamed colon, but now is battling a viral infection, and he'll likely be absent from the Tigers' starting lineup for another couple of days, according to manager Alan Trammell. There is a chance the outfielder could be used in a pinch-hitting situation as early as Friday, but the team wants him to get back to full strength before returning him to an everyday role.

Ordonez obviously isn't quite right, as he was forced to leave Wednesday's contest because of dizziness. Consider him as day-to-day. Through two games this season, he is 0-for-7 with a walk and a run scored, but said the ailment has messed with his timing. Ordonez should be able to get back on track once he overcomes the phyiscal problem.

4/6/2005

Ordonez reported feeling dizzy, and the Tigers decided to remove him in the fourth inning of Wednesday's loss to the Kansas City Royals as a precautionary measure. The outfielder, who missed some time last week with inflammation in his colon, will be re-evaluated on Thursday. Bobby Higginson filled the void and likely will remain in the lineup until Ordonez is able to return.

For now, consider Ordonez as day-to-day. Through two games this season, he is 0-for-7 with a walk and a run scored, but said the ailment has messed with his timing. Ordonez should be able to get back on track once he overcomes the phyiscal problem.
