Jason Johnson

6/20/2006

Johnson was designated for assignment by Cleveland on Tuesday, giving the Indians 10 days to trade or release the right-hander. Johnson was signed as a free agent from Detroit in the offseason, but has been a huge disappointment. Since starting the season 2-0, he has gone 1-8 with a 7.38 ERA in his last 10 starts. He allowed six runs _ three earned _ and six hits in five innings in a 12-8 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Monday, his last start.

The Cleveland Indians signed Johnson to a one-year contract Monday. The right-handed pitcher was 8-13 with a 4.54 ERA in 33 starts for the Detroit Tigers last season.

Johnson, who slipped to third in the Tigers' starting rotation after posting a 7.84 ERA in six exhibition appearances this spring, turned things around in his first start of the regular season. The righthander notched the win in Thursday's 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals, scattering five hits over 6.2 shutout innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Early in spring training, Johnson was the favorite to be the Tigers' Opening Day starter, but due to his struggles in the exhibition season, the club decided to give Jeremy Bonderman the nod. In 33 starts last year, Johnson was 8-15 with a 5.13 ERA and two complete games, including his first career shutout.
