Kerry Ligtenberg

3/29/2006

The Florida Marlins released Ligtenberg Wednesday. The 34-year-old reliever made just seven appearances for Arizona in 2005, allowing 16 hits and four walks in 9.2 innings for a 13.97 ERA. He battled elbow problems early this spring, but he pitched quite well, posting a 2.53 ERA over 10.2 innings.

Looking for someone who could go a little longer in relief, the Arizona Diamondbacks have purchased Ligtenberg's contract from Triple-A Tucson. The veteran righthander, who takes the roster spot of lefty Randy Choate, appeared in 57 games with the Toronto Blue Jays last season, going 1-6 with a 6.38 ERA and three saves.

Ligtenberg was released by the Blue Jays in spring training before signing a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks last month. He was 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA in seven appearances with Tucson prior to his callup.
