Chad Fox

5/17/2005

Diagnosed with ulnar neuritis in April, a recurring problem that he has suffered with that caused him to miss most of the 2004 season, Fox has been moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. Fox had two chances to be the Cubs closer, but this set back won't see him earn any action for at least 2 more months.

Fox walked off the mound in obvious pain after throwin a pitch in the ninth inning of Monday's victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs' reliever, who had claimed the primary closer role a day earlier, reportedly strained his pitching elbow, but the extent of the problem will not be known until he is re-evaluated on Tuesday. The Cubs have placed Fox on the 15-day disabled list and recalled Will Ohman to fill the void on the active roster.

Fox has had at least two surgeries on his pitching elbow and missed the majority of the 2004 campaign with ulnar neuritis. With Fox sidelined, the Cubs will have to determine who to call upon in save situations in upcoming games. LaTroy Hawkins has struggled in the role and pitched as a setup man on Monday. Joe Borowski could be handed the job, but he's still a couple weeks away from being fully recovered from a broken wrist.

With LaTroy Hawkins struggling in the closer role, Cubs manager Dusty Baker has said that the situation at the end of each game will determine which pitcher will get the save opportunity. For the time being, it appears Fox is the top option on the list, at least until Joe Borowski returns from a broken wrist. Fox notched the save in Sunday's win over the Pirates, striking out two and walking one in a scoreless ninth.

The closer situation continues to be a concern for the Cubs. Fox should get a few save opportunities over the next couple of weeks, but it is not likely that he is the long-term option. In 10 relief appearances this season, he has a 3.52 ERA with 11 strikeouts and five walks in 7.2 innings.
