Antonio Alfonseca

5/20/2006

The Texas Rangers have placed Alfonseca on the 15-day disabled list for a sore throwing elbow. With the right-handed reliever sidelined, the Rangers recalled Robinson Tejeda from Triple-A Oklahoma to start Friday night's game in Houston against the Astros. In 17 relief appearances this season, Alfonseca has posted a 4.80 ERA without a decision.

As anticipated, the Florida Marlins have activated Alfonseca from the 60-day disabled list, and he will be available for Tuesday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The veteran righthander has been sidelined since mid-April with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow. Fellow reliever Randy Messenger was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque to make room on the roster.

Barring any setbacks, Alfonseca is expected to be activated from the 60-day disabled list when the Marlins begin a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Miami next Tuesday. The veteran righthander, who has been sidelined since mid-April with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow, currently is on a minor league rehab assignment with Class-A Jupiter.

After throwing three pitches to the leadoff hitter in the seventh inning of Thursday's loss to the New York Mets, Alfonseca left the game because of soreness in his pitching elbow. The Marlins' righthander, who indicated the injury is not serious, will undergo a MRI on Friday to rule out any structural problems.

For now, consider Alfonseca as day-to-day. If the tests come out negative, the Marlins likely will shut down the reliever for a few days, just as a precautionary measure. In six relief appearances this season, he is 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA.

Alfonseca did not think the elbow soreness in his pitching elbow was anything to be concerned with, but tests have revealed that a stress fracture is the cause of the discomfort. The injury, which forced him to leave Thursday's game against the New York Mets, will keep the Marlins' righthander sidelined for at least two months. As a result, he has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

In six relief appearances this season, Alfonseca is 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA. Travis Smith has been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to fill the void on the roster and in the bullpen.
