Mark Bellhorn

12/22/2005

Bellhorn has signed with the San Diego Padres, agreeing to a one-year, $800,000 contract. The 31-year-old infielder struggled in 2005, splitting the season between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. He finished the year batting .210 with eight home runs, 30 RBI and three stolen bases.

Bellhorn, signed by the Yankees on August 31 after being released by Boston, has rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus and elected to become a free agent. In 94 games with Boston and New York in 2005, the second baseman batted .210 with eight home runs and 30 RBI. He went 2-for-17 (.118) with a homer, two runs scored and two RBI in September for the Yankees.

Bellhorn joined the New York Yankees immediately after signing, and the second baseman was in the lineup against Seattle on Tuesday night. Giving third baseman Alex Rodriguez a night off, the 31-year-old veteran was 0-for-4 in his Yankees debut.

Designated for assignment by Boston nearly two weeks ago, Bellhorn has refused a minor league assignment and signed with the New York Yankees. The second baseman, who delivered key home runs in the final two games of Boston's upset of New York in last October's ALCS, hit just .216 with 109 strikeouts in 283 at-bats for Boston. He missed 28 games early in the second half because of a sprained left thumb.

Bellhorn suffered a sprained left thumb in the Red Sox' loss to the Yankees on Sunday, and on Monday he was placed on the 15-day disabled list. The Red Sox' second baseman is batting .216 with seven homers and 28 RBI in 85 games this season.

Bellhorn missed his fourth straight game Monday with a severe case of the flu. There was talk about the Boston Red Sox putting the second baseman on the disabled list, but the team has held off on making such a move.

Since Kevin Youkilis was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday, the 26-year-old prospect has manned third base and third baseman Bill Mueller has moved to second to cover for Bellhorn. The other option for second base is Ramon Vazquez, who has been bothered by a quadriceps injury and hasn't made a start at second since Youkilis has arrived.

The Boston Red Sox believe Bellhorn will be ready to rejoin the lineup Tuesday night after missing four games with a nasty version of the flu. He is recuperating from what teammates have labeled the "Bill Mueller flu." The Red Sox' third baseman missed six games with the same bug in mid-April.

Bellhorn is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a severe case of the flu. The Red Sox may turn to Ramon Vazquez as their primary second baseman while Bellhorn is out of action.

Vazquez is nuring a sore hip at the moment, so Bill Mueller started at second base for the Red Sox over the weekend. Kevin Youkilis was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to cover third base for Mueller.
