Rusch's return to the Chicago Cubs' rotation was a rough one, as he lasted just 3.2 innings before getting the hook in Monday's loss to the Houston Astros. Prior to his departure, the lefthander surrendered five runs on 10 hits, including a home run. He struck out four and walked two.

Rusch will move back into the Chicago Cubs' rotation, according to manager Dusty Baker. The lefthander, who replaces the demoted Rich Hill as the team's No. 5 starter, is slated to take the mound against the Houston Astros on Monday.

Rusch has been bumped to the bullpen by the Chicago Cubs, opening a spot in the starting rotation for righthander Kerry Wood, who is slated to return to action against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. In 21 appearances this season, including 10 starts, the lefthanded Rusch is 5-3 with a 3.13 ERA and one shutout.

Rusch notched the third shutout of his major league career and first complete game in two years, blanking the San Diego Padres in Thursday's 5-0 victory. The Cubs' lefthander scattered four hits over nine innings, striking out seven and walking one. He has won three straight starts, allowing just two runs in 24 innings over that span.

Cubs manager Dusty Baker has officially named Rusch the replacement for Kerry Wood in the team's starting rotation. Wood was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday, giving Rusch the opportunity to start on Friday in his place.

Last season, Rusch went 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA while starting for an injured Wood. He is 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA in 11 games this season.

Rusch would have remained on the mound in Monday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, but was pulled from the game after straining his groin while pitching a perfect seventh inning. The Cubs' lefthander will be re-evaluated on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury.

For now, Rusch has been listed as day-to-day. In six relief appearances this season, he is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA.
