Damian Jackson

7/18/2006

Jackson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to July 8 with chest problems. The Nationals' infielder is batting .210 with four home runs and nine RBIs in 56 games this season.

Jackson has signed with the Washington Nationals, agreeing to a one-year contract. The 32-year-old utilityman spent the 2005 campaign with the San Diego Padres, batting .255 with five home runs, 23 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 118 games (275 at-bats).

With Khalil Greene suffering a fractured big toe over the weekend, Jackson will take over as San Diego's shortstop while Greene is out 2-3 weeks with his injury. Jackson, who has fared well as a utlity player for the Padres, is hitting .272 with 37 runs scored in 82 games this season.

7/17/2005

Jackson belted a solo home run in Saturday's win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, extending his current hitting streak to a career-high 11 games. Over that span, the Padres' infielder is 18-for-42 (.429) with three doubles, one home run, five RBI and four stolen bases.

Jackson tied his career high with four hits -- including two home runs -- in Sunday's victory over the Seattle Mariners. The Padres' infielder notched solo shots in the first and eighth inning to record the first multihomer game of his major league career. He has just 26 home runs in 689 career contests.

The San Diego Padres have purchased Jackson's contract from Triple-A Portland, giving them some much-needed depth on their injury plagued infield. Jackson, who takes the roster spot of outfielder Adam Hyzdu, is expected to split time at shortstop with Jesse Garcia, at least until regular starter Khalil Greene is able to return.

Jackson got the starting nod in Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies and went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and stolen base. The Padres hope to have Greene back in the lineup within the next week or so.
