Trot Nixon

10/21/2005

The Boston Red Sox have revealed that Nixon underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on October 14. The injury reportedly bothered the Red Sox' right fielder down the stretch and probably affected his performance. He batted .275 with 13 homers and 67 RBI in 124 games this season, but was limited to a .241 average with just 14 extra-base hits in 158 second-half at-bats.

The Red Sox activated Nixon in time to play Friday's game against the Royals. The right fielder had been on the disabled list since straining his left oblique muscle on July 27. Nixon was in the starting lineup, and playing right field.

An MRI exam of Nixon's oblique muscle confirmed that he has a Grade 2 tear. Boston manager Terry Francona expects Nixon to play again this season, but there isn't a timetable in place for him.

Nixon was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle. In 89 games this year, the Red Sox' right fielder is hitting .293 with 11 home runs, 50 RBI, a .372 on base percentage and .479 slugging mark.

Nixon is on a hot streak, with two more hits in Boston's loss to Oakland on Monday night. In his last six games, the Red Sox' right fielder is 11-for-21 (.524) with three doubles, three homers and 10 RBI. He's had multiple hits in five of those six games.

Nixon suffered a leg injury in Boston's doubleheader against Seattle last weekend. The Boston outfielder refused to disclose the nature of the injury, but said that it will require surgery at the end of the current season.

Since that Sunday doubleheader, Nixon has gone 9-for-17 (.529) with three doubles, three homers and 10 RBI. Apparently the injury isn't hurting his bat for the time being. For the season, Nixon is hitting .337 with six home runs and 24 RBI in 32 games.

Nixon returned from his two-game suspension Thursday, and the Boston outfielder collected four singles in the Red Sox' 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. He upped his batting average to .324 and his on-base percentage to .446 in 24 games.

Monday, May 9, is the date scheduled for Nixon's appeal of his two-game suspension for participating in the Boston-Tampa Bay bench-clearing fiasco. Boston manager Terry Francona is trying to get Nixon to drop his appeal, however, as the Red Sox face two lefthanders to kick off the Tigers-Red Sox series on Tuesday. Nixon doesn't start against lefties, and he could serve his two-day suspension instead of simply sitting on the bench as a reserve player.

Red Sox outfielder Trot Nixon has dropped the appeal of his two-game suspension for participating in the Boston-Tampa Bay bench-clearing brawl on April 15. Instead, he decided to start serving his suspension, and sat out today's game against the Tigers. Nixon could be back in the lineup as early as Thursday.

On Friday, Nixon was suspended for two games for his role in the bench-clearing incident between Boston and Tampa Bay last weekend. His actions after the benches emptied led to his suspension. If Boston's right fielder doesn't appeal his two-game suspension, he would sit out Friday and Saturday games in Texas before returning to the Red Sox' lineup on Sunday.

All four players who were issued suspensions were fined an undisclosed amount of money as well. The suspensions are to begin on Friday, but the players can file an appeal, which would allow them to continue playing until their appeal has been heard.
