Todd Walker

7/31/2006

The Padres acquired Todd Walker from the Chicago Cubs on Monday to help out at third base, which has been a weak link offensively for the defending NL West champions.

3/13/2006

Manager Dusty Baker denied he told Walker that he would become the Cubs' starting second baseman. Walker had told a TV station he would start.

The Chicago Cubs exercised their option to bring back Walker for the 2006 season. The second baseman, who batted .305 with a .355 on-base percentage in 110 games, will make $2.5 million. He also contributed 25 doubles, 12 homers and 50 runs scored.

Walker's availability for the rest of the season is highly in question after he had to be helped off the field during Friday's game against the Houston Astros. The Cubs' veteran second baseman came up lame while rounding the bases in the first inning and was taken to the hospital to undergo an MRI. Preliminary diagnosis is a strained right knee.

Walker extended his current hitting streak to 11 games in a big way Monday night, going 3-for-6 with two home runs and three RBI in a 9-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. During the streak, the Cubs' second baseman is 17-for-46 (.370) with four doubles, four home runs and nine RBI.

Walker has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, including eight straight. The Cubs' second baseman, who missed more than six weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, struggled a bit when he first returned from the injury late last month, but is batting .327 with five doubles, one home run, six RBI and nine runs scored in 14 games in June.

5/25/2005

Walker will return to the Chicago Cubs' lineup for Wednesday night's matchup with the Houston Astros after being activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day. The veteran infielder, who has been sidelined for nearly six weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, was 8-for-21 (.381) with three RBI and a stolen base in six games prior to his injury.

As scheduled, Walker joined Triple-A Iowa over the weekend to begin his rehab assignment. The Cubs' veteran infielder, who has been sidelined for nearly five weeks with a moderate to severe sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, went hitless and struck out twice in seven at-bats with the minor league club. Walker will remain with Iowa for the next several days, but hopes to be activated in time for the start of a weekend series against the White Sox.

Jerry Hairston has been filling in during Walker's absence, but his recent struggles could mean Walker will reclaim the starting role immediately upon his return. Prior to the injury, Walker was 8-for-21 with two doubles, three RBI and a stolen base in six games this season.

5/7/2005

Walker, on the disabled list with a sprained left medial collateral ligament, is scheduled to join the Cubs' Triple-A team in Salt Lake City for a rehabilitation assignment starting next weekend. The second baseman hopes to rejoin the big league club for the Cubs' series against the White Sox, which begins on May 20.

5/6/2005

Walker has been taking grounders and doing some running over the past few days, and barring any setbacks, he hopes to return to the Chicago Cubs' lineup within the next week or so. The veteran infielder has been sidelined since suffering a moderate to severe sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee when Milwaukee's Carlos Lee slid into his leg on a play at second base on April 10.

It is not yet known whether Walker will go on a minor league rehab assignment before being activated. The Cubs likely will work Walker back in slowly, splitting time at second base between him and Jerry Hairston Jr. He is 8-for-21 with two doubles, three RBI and a stolen base in six games this season.

Further testing on Walker's left knee has confirmed the original diagnosis of a moderate to severe sprain of the medial collateral ligament, an injury suffered when Milwaukee's Carlos Lee slid into him on a play at second base late in Sunday's game against the Brewers. The Cubs' second baseman, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday, will not need surgery, but he is expected to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks.

With Walker unavailable, the Cubs will turn to Jerry Hairston to fill the void at second base. Jose Macias, Neifi Perez and Mike Fontenot, who was recalled to take Walker's roster spot, also could see some time at the position. Through six games this season, Walker is batting .381 with two doubles, three RBI and a stolen base.

The Cubs have placed the veteran infielder on the 15-day disabled list and currently do not have a timetable for his return.
