Raul Chavez

4/9/2006

Chavez was designated for assignment on Sunday by the Orioles, the same day they purchased the contract of reliever Cory Morris. The 33-year-old catcher appeared in one game defensively for the Orioles this season and didn't have a plate appearance. If Baltimore does not trade or release Chavez in 10 days, he can become a free agent or accept the demotion to the minor leagues.

Chavez resigned with Houston on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration. The two sides agreed to a $400,000, one-year deal. The backup catcher hit .172 with two homers and six RBIs in 37 games last season.

The Astros outrighted Chavez to Triple-A Round Rockk on Saturday after activated Humberto Quintero from the disabled list. Chavez, who is hitting just .186 in 29 games with the Astros in 2005, now has 72 hours to decide whether to accept the assignment.

The Houston Astros have purchased Chavez' contract from Triple-A Round Rock, filling the roster spot of fellow catcher Humberto Quintero, who is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks after undergoing an appendectomy over the weekend. Chavez was designated for assignment earlier this month after batting .203 with three RBI in 22 games with the Astros in 2005.

After being designated for assignment a week ago, Chavez cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Houston's Triple-A Round Rock. The veteran catcher has the defensive skills to help a major league club, but his bat holds him back. He was batting .203 (13-for-64) with three doubles, RBI and runs scored in 22 games with Houston.

The Houston Astros have designated Chavez for assignment, opening a spot on the roster for Humberto Quintero, who was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday. In 22 games with Houston this season, Chavez batted just .203 with three doubles and three RBI.
