Danny Graves

12/20/2005

Graves signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians on Monday. The 32-year-old reliever went 1-1 with a 6.52 ERA in 40 games for the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets last season. Opposing batters hit a whopping .347 off him and he allowed nine home runs in just 38 2/3 innings.

On Thursday, the New York Mets declined their $5 million option on Graves. The move didn't come as a surprise, as the veteran reliever struggled to a 1-1 finish with a 6.52 ERA over 38.2 innings for the Reds and Mets. Cincinnati released the former closer at the end of May, after he posted a 7.36 ERA and .357 opponent batting average in 20 appearances. Somehow he managed to save 10 games in 12 chances before his release.

Graves has been designated for assignment by the New York Mets, opening a spot on the roster for veteran starting pitcher Steve Trachsel, who was activated from the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday. Graves began the season with the Cincinnati Reds, but was released before eventually inking with the Mets. Overall this year, he is 1-1 with a 6.63 ERA and 10 saves in 37 relief appearances.

After nearly a week's worth of contract negotiations, relief pitcher Danny Graves officially signed with the Mets on Saturday. The righthanded reliever will be paid the prorated portion of the $330,000 league minimum by New York, and there is a team option for next year with a buyout clause. Graves will pitch the middle innings, as the Mets will still give save opportunities to current closer Braden Looper.

As anticipated, Graves has cleared waivers and been unconditionally released by the Cincinnati Reds, making him a free agent. After surrendering five runs on four hits and a walk in a loss to Cleveland on May 22, the reliever yelled at a heckling fan and made an obsence gesture with his hand -- moves that prompted the Reds to designate him for assignment. Graves leaves the team as the franchise's all-time saves leader.

The Cincinnati Reds have asked for unconditional release waivers on Graves, meaning if no other team claims him on waivers over the next 48 hours, he will become a free agent. The righthander was designated for assignment after surrendering five runs on four hits and a walk in a loss to Cleveland on May 22. He is the club's all-time saves leader.

Graves was rocked by the Cleveland Indians in the ninth inning of Sunday's meeting, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk. The closer, who notched just one out before departing to a chorus of boos, is 1-1 with a gaudy 7.36 ERA and 10 saves in 20 relief appearances this season. Over his last three games, Graves has surrendered nine runs in just 2.2 innings of work.

Following Sunday's dismal performance -- and the actions that followed -- Graves has been designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds. The closer surrendered five runs on four hits and a walk in Sunday's loss, and notched just one out before departing to a chorus of boos. Shortly thereafter, Graves yelled at a heckling fan and reportedly made an obsence gesture with his hand. The Reds have 10 days to trade Graves or put him on waivers.

5/3/2005

Graves blew his first save of the 2005 campaign, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on four hits, including two home runs, in just one-third of an inning in Monday's loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds' closer had been successful in his previous eight save opportunities this season.

Despite notching eight saves, Graves has been anything but dominant in his 12 appearances this year. He's given up 16 hits and walked eight batters in 10.2 innings. He is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA and 2.25 WHIP.
