Al Levine

6/12/2005

The Giants added reliever Jack Taschner to their roster on Saturday and designated Levine for assignment. Levine made nine appearances for San Francisco this season, allowing 16 hits and 11 earned runs in 10.1 innings -- good for a bloated 9.58 ERA. The 37-year-old journeyman reliever has worked for seven different teams in 10 major league seasons.

Levine has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the San Francisco Giants after missing more than three weeks with a strained neck. The veteran righthander had appeared in five games prior to his stint on the DL, posting a 7.20 ERA.

Levine has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the San Francisco Giants, opening a spot on the roster for 25-year-old righthander Brad Hennessey, who started Thursday's game against the Astros. Levine is nursing a strained neck and will be sidelined for at least the next two weeks.

In five relief appearances with San Francisco this season, Levine has allowed four runs on six hits in five innings of work, resulting in a 7.20 ERA. Even when healthy, he is not worth a spot on your fantasy roster.

The San Francisco Giants have purchased Levine's contract from Triple-A Fresno, supplying them with some depth in their over-used bullpen. The veteran reliever was with the Giants in spring training and was solid in nine exhibition appearances, allowing five hits in nine shutout innings. He asked for and was granted his release in late March, then inked a minor league deal with the team a week later.

Since they don't need a fifth starter until next week, the Giants optioned Jerome Williams to Fresno, opening a spot on the roster for Levine In 65 relief appearances with the Detroit Tigers in 2004, Levine went 3-4 with a 4.58 ERA in 65 relief appearances.

After being granted his release last week, Levine has re-signed with the San Francisco Giants, agreeing to a minor league contract. The veteran righthander, who was a non-roster invitee this spring, was solid in nine exhibition appearances, allowing five hits in nine shutout innings.

Levine likely will join the Giants' Triple-A affiliate. He spent the 2004 campaign with the Detroit Tigers, going 3-4 with a 4.58 ERA in 65 relief appearances.
