Tony Graffanino

7/26/2006

The Brewers acquired Graffanino from the Royals on Tuesday in exchange for left-hander Jorge De La Rosa. Graffanino, who can play all four infield positions, will be in Milwaukee for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, according to general manager Doug Melvin. "He's someone who can help us as we're getting through this injury bug right now," Melvin said.

Graffanino went 1-for-5 on Sunday in the Royals' 9-6 win over the Detroit Tigers to extend his hitting streak to a career high-tying 10 games.

Graffanino accepted salary arbitration from the Boston Red Sox before Monday night's deadline, meaning the infielder will return to Boston next season.

Graffanino departed Boston's 8-7 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday during the third inning. The Red Sox' second baseman left after straining his left groin.

With Mark Bellhorn going on the disabled list for a sprained thumb, the Boston Red Sox quickly acted and traded for Graffanino. To get the veteran infielder, Boston dealt Triple-A outfielder Chip Ambres and Class-A southpaw Juan Cedeno to the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals have been light on healthy first basemen of late, with Mike Sweeney out with an oblique strain and Ken Harvey bothered by a bad back. On Saturday and Sunday, Graffanino started at first base for Kansas City.

The new position didn't seem to be a distraction to Graffanino, who went 4-for-8 with a double over the weekend. He's batting .250 for the season in 25 games.

On Sunday, Graffanino had the wind knocked out of him and landed awkwardly on his hand in a collision with Baltimore's Chris Gomez at first base. Graffanino remained in the game, a 10-8 Royals win over the Orioles, but Ruben Gotay pinch-hit for him when his next at-bat came up.

X-rays proved negative and Graffanino's status is day-to-day.

Graffanino has been sharing second base with Ruben Gotay, but for now he probably gets most of the starts at third base with Mark Teahen going on the disabled list with a back ailment.

Graffanino has gone 7-for-20 (.350) with a pair of doubles so far in 2005. He had left knee surgery in 2004, and the Royals had been playing him cautiously in the early going of the new season.

Graffanino got the starting nod at second base in Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers, replacing Ruben Gotay, who was in the lineup on Opening Day. The veteran infielder took advantage of the opportunity, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.

Graffanino had hoped to be the Royals' everyday second baseman this season, but the team decided to work him in slowly, as he is coming back from knee surgery. He and Gotay likely will split time fairly evenly.
