Matt Lawton

5/3/2006

Lawton got the start in center field Monday over struggling regular Jeremy Reed, and Willie Bloomquist played there Tuesday. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is reporting that Lawton will be in the lineup Wednesday against the White Sox and Reed will get the Thursday start.

Lawton was activated by the Mariners on Wednesday after serving his 10-day suspension for testing positive for steroids. Lawton was suspended in November 2005 for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Because he tested positive under baseball's former program, he had to miss the first 10 days of this season.

The Seattle Mariners and Lawton agreed to a $400,000, one-year contract. The left-handed-hitting Lawton tested positive for steroids and has been suspended under the new MLB steroid policy. Lawton played with the Pirates, Cubs and Yankees in 2005, batting a combined .254 with 13 home runs and 53 RBIs.

On Wednesday, Lawton was suspended under the new MLB steroid policy. The veteran outfielder, who played with the Pirates, Cubs and Yankees in 2005, will serve a 10-game suspension at the start of the 2006 campaign. Lawton is a free agent after batting .254 with a .356 on-base percentage in 141 games last season.

For the second time in a month, Matt Lawton is on the move. On Saturday, the Cubs traded Lawton to the New York Yankees for minor league pitcher Justin Berg. Lawton, who began the season in Pittsburgh, had an on base percentage of just .289 in 19 games with the Cubs. For the season, Lawton is hitting .268 with 11 homers, 49 RBI, 61 runs and 17 stolen bases.

The Cubs may have found themselves a leadoff hitter, trading recently acquired outfielder Jody Gerut to Pittsburgh for Lawton just before the July 31 trade deadline passed. Lawton batted .273 with a .380 on-base percentage in 101 games for the Pirates before Sunday's trade.

Lawton had a productive night at the top of the Pirates' lineup in Tuesday's win over the Florida Marlins, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. The outfielder went 4-for-4 with a double, RBI and walk, improving his season batting average to .278. He also was active on the basepaths, notching three steals.

After recording just two hits in his previous 24 at-bats, Lawton got back on track in Tuesday's victory over the Washington Nationals. The Pirates' outfielder went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, two-run double and finished with five RBI, tying a season high.

Lawton went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, one RBI and his second home run in as many days in Monday's loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Over his last three games, the Pirates' outfielder is 8-for-9 (.889) with a pair of homers, two doubles, four walks and three runs scored.

Lawton went 3-for-5 with a double and the fourth grand slam of his major league career in Sunday's victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Pirates' outfielder also walked, notched two stolen bases and scored three runs. Over his last six games, Lawton is 10-for-27 (.370) with two homers, two doubles, seven RBI and three stolen bases.

Lawton has been a perfect addition to the top of the Pirates' batting order this season, posting a .399 on-base percentage in 30 games. For the year, he is batting .299 with three home runs, 14 RBI and six stolen bases.
