Shannon Stewart

7/17/2006

Stewart was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday due to a strained left plantar fascia. Stewart suffered the injury during his at-bat in the fifth inning of the Twins' 6-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday and left the contest. He had missed 33 games in May and June with a partial thickness tear of his left plantar fascia.

Minnesota activated Stewart from the 15-day disabled list on Friday and placed fellow outfielder Rondell White on the DL, retroactive to June 18. Stewart went on the DL on May 22 with a partial thickness tear of his left foot and missed 33 games. Before getting injured, he was batting .298 with two homers and 17 RBIs.

The Twins sent Stewart on a rehabilitation assignment Friday night. The 32-year-old Minnesota outfielder has been on the disabled list since May 22 with a plantar fascia problem in his left foot. He is expected to return to the majors around the end of the month.

Stewart's season appears to be over, due to continuing shoulder problems suffered after colliding with an outfield wall on August 23. He has struggled since returning from that injury, hitting .203 (12-for-59) in 14 games.

Stewart left Friday night's game in the fourth inning, after he collided with the outfield wall while making a tough catch. Stewart made the catch on Paul Konerko's line drive, but doubled over in pain immediately after he threw the ball back into the infield. When Stewart walked off the field, he seemed to be favoring his left shoulder. We'll update this situation as soon as more information is known.

Stewart managed just one pinch-hitting appearance over the weekend after running into the left-field wall at Dodger Stadium and leaving Minnesota's 6-5 loss to Los Angeles on Friday night. Still, the Twins' left fielder is expected to return Tuesday, when Minnesota returns home and hosts San Francisco in a three-game set.

While attempting to catch a flyball, Stewart ran into the left-field wall at Dodger Stadium on Friday night and bruised his wrist. Stewart had to leave the game following the incident. He was replaced in left by Lew Ford, who should start in Stewart's place until he's ready to play. Reports list Stewart as day-to-day.

Stewart homered for the third straight game in the Twins' 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday. After a slow start in April, Stewart has come alive in May, hitting .330 with seven dingers and 16 RBI in 25 games, with 21 runs, a .390 OBP and .547 slugging.
