Matt Mantei

7/26/2005

Mantei, out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his left ankle, was transferred from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.

Mantei had season-ending surgery on his left ankle Thursday. The Red Sox' reliever, who went on the DL for a ligament sprain in the ankle at the beginning of July, was considering surgery and a cortisone injection to possibly extend his season. The 32-year-old righthander made the right choice opting for surgery, as the procedure revealed that the damage to the ligament was quite extensive. Mantei finishes the year with a 1-0 mark and 6.49 ERA in 34 relief appearances.

Mantei was placed on the 15-day disabled list by Boston on Saturday with a sprained ligament in his left ankle. To fill his roster spot, the Red Sox have recalled Abe Alvarez from Triple-A Pawtucket. Mantei originally hurt the ankle back on April 25, but attempted to continue pitching through the injury, which likely has contributed to his struggles this season.

Three innings after David Wells left Boston's Monday loss with a foot injury, Mantei turned his left ankle backing up third base and left the game immediately. While X-rays were negative, the Red Sox' reliever said the ankle was a bit tender. He noted that it was an ankle he had sprained roughly 10 times over his career.

Manager Terry Francona said Mantei probably would have stayed in the game if it was tied. That suggests the injury is minor, which is more than can be said about Wells' injury earlier in the game.
