Bobby Higginson

5/27/2005

Higginson underwent successful surgery Thursday for a bone chip and bone spur in his right elbow. The Tigers' outfielder will be out of action for 8-12 weeks. He was 2-for-26 (.077) on the season as a part-time player.

Higginson has been told that he has bone spurs and bone chips in his right elbow that likely will require surgery. The outfielder will now seek a second opinion. If surgery is required, Higginson would miss six to eight weeks.

On Friday the Tigers placed Higginson on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right elbow. The elbow had been bothering Higginson since May 6 when he sat out his first game with soreness. Higginson had an MRI exam last Saturday revealing a bone spur in his throwing elbow, and although he was taking anti-inflammatory medication, he will now sit out an additional eight days with the injury.

Higginson is only batting .077 on the season (2-for-26), and is no longer a fantasy factor. He has been replaced in the Tigers' starting outfield by a number of young players such as Marcus Thames, Craig Monroe, and Nook Logan.

Higginson's tender and swollen right elbow is keeping the Tigers' outfielder from hitting and throwing. Higginson said he had an MRI exam on his throwing elbow on Saturday, which he said detected a bone spur. He is taking anti-inflammatory medication.

Limited to pinch-running, Higginson still may face a stint on the disabled list unless his elbow shows marked improvement over the next day or two.

After getting a rare start on Thursday, Higginson's right elbow swelled up overnight and remained quite painful through the weekend. It's possible that a stint on the disabled list is brewing for the veteran outfielder, who is 2-for-26 (.077) on the season and stuck in an 0-for-21 slide. He recorded his only two hits and one RBI for the season on April 7, and he hasn't score a run since then.

As a backup outfielder for the Detroit Tigers this season, Higginson generally has been getting starts every 5-10 days. The infrequent play hasn't worked well for the 34-year-old outfielder. He is 2-for-26 (.077) on the season, and he's on an 0-for-21 slide. Higginson's only two hits came in his first of six starts this season on April 7. He recorded his only RBI that day and hasn't scored a run since then.
