Michael Tucker

3/30/2006

The Washington Nationals granted Tucker his unconditional release Thursday after the veteran outfielder lost a bid for a bench job to Daryle Ward. Tucker hit .158 (6-for-38) with a triple as his only extra-base hit this spring. Ward batted .273 with four home runs in 20 games.

On Saturday Tucker was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for righthanded pitcher Kevin Pichardo. The Giants were also reported to have sent approximately $50,000 in cash to Philadelphia, along with the veteran outfielder, to help seal the deal. Tucker is batting .240 with 33 RBI in 104 games this season, including 56 starts.

Tucker notched an RBI double and his second grand slam of the 2005 campaign in Sunday's victory over the Colorado Rockies. Over the last three games, the Giants' outfielder is 5-for-11 with two home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored. His other grand slam also came against Colorado on April 9.

As long as Barry Bonds and Moises Alou are sidelined, Tucker should be in the Giants' lineup on a daily basis. Going into the weekend series at Colorado, he was batting just .167 through seven contests.
