Ismael Valdez

7/26/2005

After making his season debut with two innings of relief work in last Friday's loss to the San Francisco Giants, Valdez will return to the Florida Marlins' starting rotation on Wednesday, getting the nod against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The veteran righthander missed more than three months with a broken bone in his right leg.

Valdez is expected to make his 2005 debut within the next week. The veteran righthander, who has been sidelined all season with a broken bone in his right leg, will make his final minor league rehab appearance with Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday, and he'll likely be activated by the Marlins shortly thereafter. Last season, Valdez spent time with San Diego and Florida, going 14-9 with a 5.19 ERA and one complete game in 34 appearances, including 31 starts.

Barring any setbacks, Valdez hopes to resume jogging next week and start throwing again shortly thereafter. Despite the progress, the Marlins' righthander, who has been sidelined all season with a hairline fracture in his right fibula, is not expected to return to the mound for Florida until at least mid-May.

Brian Moehler will remain in the rotation at least until Valdez is back in action. Last season, Valdez spent time with San Diego and Florida, going 14-9 with a 5.19 ERA and one complete game in 34 appearances, including 31 starts.

Although the timetable could change after Valdez is examined Monday by team doctors, the pitcher reportedly will now miss another two to four weeks because of the hairline fracture in his right leg.

Tests have revealed that Valdez has a hairline fracture in his right shin, and the Florida Marlins have decided to place him on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 4. Brian Moehler is expected to remain in the starting rotation until Valdez is able to return to action.

The Marlins said they would fill the open roster spot on Friday. Despite being limited by a virus early in spring training, Valdez was able to claim the fifth spot in the Marlins' rotation for 2005. Last season, he spent time with San Diego and Florida, going 14-9 with a 5.19 ERA and one complete game in 34 appearances, including 31 starts.

Valdez, who was struck on the shin by a batted ball in a minor league game a week ago, is now available to work out of the Florida bullpen. He was scratched from his scheduled start against Washington last Saturday.

The 31-year-old's stint in the bullpen will be brief. He is expected to return to the Marlins' rotation next Tuesday, April 19, in Washington.

Although his bruised right shin has shown improvement over the past couple of days, Valdez has been scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday. The Marlins' righthander, who suffered the injury in a minor league outing earlier this week, will be replaced in the rotation temporarily by Brian Moehler. Valdez should be ready to take the mound on April 19 -- the next time the Marlins need a fifth starter.
