Jeff Cirillo

Cirillo was back in the starting lineup Monday, a day after getting the day off.

Cirillo has decided to return to Milwaukee, agreeing to a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Brewers on Monday. The 36-year-old Cirillo batted .281 with 15 doubles and 23 RBIs in 77 games last season. He missed two months with a broken finger.

Out since mid-June with a broken hand, Cirillo was activated from the disabled list by the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. In 60 games this season, mostly as a backup infielder, Cirillo is batting .280 with a .376 on-base percentage.

Just 10 days after getting a chance to play full time, Cirillo went down with a broken hand in Milwaukee's game on Friday night against Minnesota. The third baseman will miss 4-6 weeks with the injury and will be replaced by Bill Hall or Wes Helms.

Cirillo was handed a prime opportunity to play when Russell Branyan fractured a finger at the start of June, but the veteran third baseman has been slowed by a sprained left wrist. Cirillo has managed to play just once since June 7, and Bill Hall has picked up most of the recent starts at third base.

With Russell Branyan slated to miss the next 2-4 weeks with a broken finger on his left hand, the Milwaukee Brewers plan to give Cirillo the majority of the starts at third base over that span. The veteran is batting .283 with one home run, eight RBI and four stolen bases in 46 games this season.

Cirillo got a surprise start at the hot corner for the Milwaukee Brewers in Monday's Opening Day matchup with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The veteran infielder, who was expected to serve as a backup this season, took advantage of the opportunity, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBI, two runs scored and a walk.

Russell Branyan and Wes Helms were expected to split time at third base this season, but it appears Cirillo will be in the mix as well. He appeared in just 33 games with the San Diego Padres last year, hitting .213 with one home run and seven RBI.
