Tony Womack

6/30/2006

Womack was designated for assignment on Friday by the Cubs as they made room for outfielder Angel Pagan to be recalled after a stint on the 60-day DL. Womack was sent to Triple-A Iowa earlier this week after hitting .280 with a homer and two RBIs in 19 games for Chicago. He was signed by Iowa on May 7 and recalled by Chicago on May 26 after beginning the season with Cincinnati.

Womack was sent to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday after back spasms forced him out of Saturday's 3-0 loss to Minnesota. The 36-year-old second baseman has been day to day. "He had a special clause in his contract where he could go down without being off the roster and he's available to come back," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said.

Womack left Saturday's 3-0 loss to Minnesota with back spasms and remained sidelined for Sunday's 8-1 defeat to the Twins. The Cubs' second baseman is listed as day-to-day, but manager Dusty Baker said he is feeling better. Womack's injury coupled with one to Freddie Bynum (arm) forced Derrek Lee to return one day sooner than expected after missing two months with a broken wrist.

Womack was designated for assignment by the Reds on Monday after Cincinnati acquired outfielder Cody Ross from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Womack, a utilityman who hadn't started since April 14, hit .222 with three RBIs in nine games with the Reds. His playing time dwindled once newcomer Brandon Phillips came over in a trade with the Cleveland Indians on April 7.

The New York Yankees traded Womack to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for infielder Kevin Howard and outfielder Ben Himes. The Yankees will also send $900,000 to the Reds to offset part of Womack's $2 million salary next season.

When Hideki Matsui is ready to return to the New York outfield, he may return to left and force Womack to center. The Yankees are thinking about having Womack and Bernie Williams share center field while keeping Matsui at one position as the full-time player.

For the second time in four games, Womack stole four bases in a Yankees victory. Fresh off a move from second base to left field, Womack swiped four bags in New York's 6-4 win over Oakland on Sunday. Remarkably, he didn't score a run for the rejuvenated Yankees. On May 11, Womack stole four bags and scored three times in a victory over Seattle.

For the season, Womack is batting .287 with 10 stolen bases in 12 tries.

Womack ran wild on Wednesday, stealing four bases in the New York Yankees' 13-9 win over the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees' left fielder was 2-for-5 with three runs scored in the victory.

Womack hasn't let his move from second base to left field affect his productivity at the plate. Since taking over in left on May 3, he is 11-for-35 (.314) with eight runs scored in nine games. He's a .292 hitter for the season.

After signing a two-year deal to be the New York Yankees' second baseman, Womack has his tenure at second base end after one month in the Bronx. With Bernie Williams battling a sore throwing elbow that compromises his defensive game, Hideki Matsui moves from left to center, and Womack steps in as the left fielder. Prospect Robinson Cano, recalled from Triple-A Columbus, takes over at second.

Womack was a regular in Arizona's outfield in 1999, but he's played just five games beyond the infield since then. Perhaps he'll be back at second before long -- if Cano struggles and George Steinbrenner instructs his front office to trade for a major league outfielder.
