Darren Oliver

5/8/2005

The Cubs signed Oliver to a minor league deal over the weekend, and the lefthander was expected to start for the club's Triple-A affiliate in Iowa on Sunday. Oliver left the Diamondbacks' Triple-A team in Tucson last Monday and hinted at the time that he might retire. He pitched for the Marlins and Astros last season, posting a 3-3 record and 5.94 ERA in 27 combined appearances.

With Kerry Wood injured and Ryan Dempster possibly moving into the closer's role, the Cubs are thin on starting pitching. Oliver won 13 games for the Rockies in 2003.
