Julian Tavarez

3/30/2006

Tavarez was suspended for 10 days and fined Thursday for his role in a brawl with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays this week. The Boston reliever punched Tampa Bay's Joey Gathright lightly on the jaw after a play at home plate. The penalty would start next Monday, when Boston plays its season opener, unless the players' association appeals.

Tavarez will be the Cardinals' top option in save situations over the next couple of weeks, as regular closer Jason Isringhausen has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained abdominal muscle. According to manager Tony La Russa, Ray King could get an opportunity or two as well.

Tavarez, who has 15 saves over the past two seasons, is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in nine relief appearances in 2005. The Cardinals hope to have Isringhausen back in the bullpen when he is eligible to be activated, so Tavarez' stay in the closer role will be temporary.
