Todd Jones

4/20/2006

After pitching simulated games Tuesday and Wednesday in Oakland, Jones was activated from the disabled list on Thursday. The Tigers' closer, who is coming back from a hamstring injury, will be available when Detroit plays at Seattle this weekend.

Jones aggravated a left hamstring injury over the weekend and begins the new season on the 15-day disabled list. The 37-year-old right-hander is expected to serve as the Tigers' closer in 2006, but Fernando Rodney will work the ninth inning while Jones rehabs his injury.

Jones signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers. The 37-year-old closer joins the Tigers after saving 40 games with a 2.10 ERA for the Marlins in 2005.

Jones continues to finish off the Marlins' opponents in late innings, as he's notched a save in each of his last 12 relief appearances. Over that span, the 37-year-old righthander has allowed just seven hits over 13.1 scoreless innings, striking out 12 batters and walking only one.

With Guillermo Mota headed to the 15-day disabled list with an elbow problem, Jones is slated to step into the closer role for the Florida Marlins. The veteran righthander, who notched a save in Friday's victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, has a 1.69 ERA in nine relief appearances this season.

Jones has plenty of experience as a closer, boasting 187 saves in his major league career. Mota is slated to miss at least three weeks, so if you need someone to fill in during that span, Jones is not a bad option.
